Holyfield's Not Holy!

Evander Holyfield         In this message we are going to take a look at former heavyweight boxing champion Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield. Evander Holyfield began his boxing career as a Cruiserweight (the weight division directly under Heavyweight). In 1986 he became the undisputed World Cruiserweight Boxing Champion. Holyfield continues to this day to be the only former undisputed, undefeated Cruiserweight Champion*(1). It was in 1990 that Holyfield achieved his lifelong dream of becoming World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. In all, Holyfield has held the title of the Heavyweight Boxing Champion four times, surpassing Muhammad Ali and Floyd Patterson who each became the Heavyweight Champion three times.

Those who have followed Holyfield’s boxing career and his witness for the Lord Jesus Christ over the course of his career may know he credits his praying grandmother for the godly impact and influence she had on his young life. When he was a child she helped to instill in him the disciplines of prayer and Bible study. Holyfield said that it was when he was 14 or 15 that he decided he wanted to live for the Lord*(2). In a television interview, Holyfield showed his competitive spirit by saying as a kid it was his grandmother’s persistence in prayer that challenged him to kneel down in prayer with her long enough that he might out pray her. Even if Holyfield didn’t ever succeed in out praying his grandmother, we can be confident that she sowed precious seed into his life by teaching him to seek the Lord and to read His Book, the Holy Bible.

Holyfield’s current record (as of January 2008) as a heavyweight boxer is 42 wins, 9 losses, and 2 draws. By the year 2004 Holyfield had suffered consecutive losses to Chris Byrd (2002), James Toney (2003), and Larry Donald (2004). At the end of that year, Holyfield’s website (EvanderHolyfield.com) featured a posting that sought to solicit opinions from his fans about whether or not he should continue on with boxing. A Prophetic Word For Evander Holyfield was posted on the “message board” at Holyfield’s website on April 9, 2006 and also on the FMH Children’s Club International ministry website on October 9, 2006. Here is the relevant portion (it can be read in its entirety @ www.fmh-child.org):

***************************************************

Dear Champ and Team Holyfield,

Greetings in the name of the LORD Jesus Christ, and a beautiful and glorious New Year to all of you. Brother Holyfield, although I have followed your career since the early 90’s, this is my first time to send you a message. I noticed the invitation that appeared on your website a year ago - inviting your fan’s and supporter’s comments which might help you gain insight and help you with your decision whether or not to continue your career in boxing. Well, the LORD has given me a prophetic word for you. And the text I was given is 2 SA 7:1-11 (KJV):

“And it came to pass, when the king [David] sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies, (vs. 2) That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within [tent] curtains. (vs. 3) And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart, for the LORD is with thee. (vs. 4) And it came to pass that night that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, (vs. 5) Go and tell my servant David, thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build [M]e an house for [M]e to dwell in? (vs. 6) Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked [about] in a tent and in a tabernacle. (vs. 7) In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed [M]y people Israel, saying, Why build ye not [M]e an house of cedar? (vs. 8) Now therefore so shalt thou say unto [M]y servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote [sheepfold], from following the sheep, to be ruler over [M]y people Israel: (vs. 9) And I was with thee whithersover thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the names of the great men that are in the earth. (vs. 10) Moreover, I will appoint a place for [M]y people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime. (vs. 11) And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over [M]y people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth [declares to] thee that [H]e will make thee an house [a royal dynasty]…” - 2 SA 7:1-11 (KJV)

In verse 1 of this passage, the Bible declares that God gave the king rest from all of his enemies – TOTAL VICTORY (protection and safety). And in verse 2, the king desired to do something for God – moved by his love towards God, and the gratitude he felt for all He had done for him. King David expressed his desire to glorify God through the following words: “I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.” But the prophet picks up on the desire of the king's heart - and exhorts him to “Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.” And then the LORD visits the prophet that night, and takes him in different direction, saying, “Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build [M]e an house for [M]e to dwell in? (vs. 4) So we see that God knew the heart (desire) of the king, and the prophet did, also (to build a house for God to dwell in). And skipping ahead to verse 8, the LORD takes this opportunity to remind the king, through the prophet, just how far He has brought him: “...I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be a ruler over [M]y people, over Israel: And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name..." (vs. 8 & 9) - The name “Evander Holyfield” has become a great name, indeed, both in the Church - and the world. And at the end of this passage in 2 SA 7, we read, “I will make thee an house...” (vs. 11). How amazing it is that God has made you - and all of the rest us, who are believers in the LORD Jesus Christ - His house!!! We [you] are “the temple of the Holy Ghost...” – 1 CO 6:19

King David desired to dwell with the LORD, who was his God: “And the king said to Nathan the prophet, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in curtains. (vs. 2) Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee...” (vs.3) And in looking at one of David’s heartfelt prayers that is written in the Psalms, he reveals his zeal and desire for the house of God (to be in God’s presence): “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in His temple...” – PSA 27:4 Brother Holyfield, THE LORD DESIRES TO DWELL WITH YOU MORE THAN YOU DESIRE TO DWELL WITH HIM, AND THE DESIRES WITHIN YOUR HEART HAVE BEEN PLACED THERE BY THE LORD, HIMSELF. And He has promised to give you “the desires of your heart” [the desires that He has placed within your heart]... - PSA 37:4. Your desire is to glorify God through a successful, overcoming, and victorious life. His desire for you is for you to fulfill your calling through Him – which will glorify Him – more than you desire it within yourself. JESUS laid down his life – gave it for His friends – that He might live through you.

The LORD desires to glorify Himself through your life – more so than what He has to this point in time. He delights in doing the impossible – which is declared by Team Holyfield. Your career has been a testament to that. And the LORD desires to take your life into a greater dimension of and for His glory:

There is a powerful quote in a movie titled “CHARIOTS OF FIRE”. It is the story of a missionary to China who lives and runs to honor God and glorify His name. During a meeting with two of his Brethren, the first declares, “What we need now is a muscular Christian, to make folks sit up and take notice…” And an elder with the mission exhorts him, saying, “…You can praise the LORD by…[serving Him with] perfection – don’t compromise compromise is the language of the devil. Run [serve] in God’s name, and let the world stand back and wonder…” And when Christians perform what is perceived as being impossible – God will get all of the glory.

Now, through the ministry that I have been working with for the last few months, I have learned a powerful truth about the saving and healing walk of the victorious Christian. We are progressively changed into the image of the LORD Jesus Christ through the process SEEKING, HEARING, and OBEYING [suffering for Jesus]. And through our walk of obedience (which the Bible often refers to as “walking in the Spirit”), we are killing off “sinful flesh” as we receive the word of God, and walk in it and through it [His spoken word]: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every [life-changing] word that proceedeth out of the MOUTH of God (to his regenerated spirit)” – MAT 4:4. This is the word and work that the LORD has given me to speak to you. “Praise be the LORD”…

***************************************************

The prophetic word given to Holyfield speaks of great promise and great potential for his life and ministry. The Lord spoke through His written word (2 Samuel 7:9) to Holyfield that He would make him a “great name” [a holy and righteous name] among the nations:

I have made thee a great name. He [David] had become famous for his courage, conduct, and great achievements, and was more talked of than any of the great men of his day. A great name is what those who have it have great reason to be thankful for and may improve to good purposes, but what those who have it not have no reason to be ambitious of: a good name is more desirable. A man may pass through the world very obscurely and yet very comfortably.” (Matthew Henry’s Complete Commentary On The Whole Bible)

When we look at the name “Holyfield”, we see that it is made up of two (2) smaller words, Holy” and “Field”. A meaning can be provided for each of these words, and the Lord has given us the meanings for this message. The meanings for 1) “Field” and 2) “Holy” are opposites, and either one or the other is being fulfilled in life of Evander Holyfield at any given time:

         1) The word “Field” indicates something common, or fleshly: profane): “But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.” - Acts 10:14 (KJV) When Holyfield makes a decision based on what his flesh desires instead of what the Spirit has spoken to him he is “prostituting” an instrument set apart for the Lord’s use (himself). Any time he chooses to do his will instead of God’s will his actions are “common”, unclean, and profane.

PROFA'NE [“Field”], adjective:

Not purified or holy; allowed for common use; as a profane place. Ezek 42. and 48. (Webster’s 1828 Dictionary)

         2) The word “Holy” indicates God’s will for Holyfield to be “royal” as in a royal kingdom or throne: “Thou shalt also be a crown of glory [honor] in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem [instrument of righteousness to bring men to repentence] in the hand of thy God.” - Isaiah 62:3 (KJV)

HO'LY, adjective:

Properly, whole, entire or perfect, in a moral sense. Hence, pure in heart, temper or dispositions; free from sin and sinful affections. Applied to the Supreme Being, holy signifies perfectly pure, immaculate and complete in moral character; Man is more or less holy, as his heart is more or less sanctified, or purified from evil dispositions. We call a man holy, when his heart is conformed in some degree to the image of God, and his life is regulated by the divine precepts. Hence, holy is used as nearly synonymous with good, pious, godly. (Webster’s 1828 Dictionary)

The most recognized meaning of holy is to be sanctified unto God and His purposes:

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee [Brother Holyfield], and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” - Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

Holyfield has been referred to as a “workaholic” and an “overachiever” and his success has amazed those who have followed his boxing. Yet with all of the temporal (earthly) success Holyfield has achieved, he must “put his money where his mouth is” when it comes to the words he has spoken to the world that he is not doing anything to glorify himself, but to glorify God. It is only by laying down his own fleshly desires and doing “the will of the Father” that Holyfield will be able to “enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 7:21).

In 1994 Holyfield made a defense of his Heavyweight title against contender Michael Moorer. Moorer won by decision, taking both the match and the Heavyweight title. Directly after the fight, Holyfield was rushed to a hospital where it was determined that he was going into heart failure*(3). After days of tests, he was told that he had heart problems were not life-threatening, but that he must retire from the ring*(4).

In 1996 Holyfield was interviewed “live” on Trinity Broadcasting Network's “Praise The Lord” program that was hosted by Paul and Jan Crouch. Holyfield gave a testimony about attending a series of Evangelist Benny Hinn’s Miracle Crusade services that year. Holyfield said, “I truly believe that a lot of people thought that I went to the Crusade to be healed, but I didn't go to the Crusade to be healed. I went to the Crusade to get closer with the Lord. And I got anointed and got closer to the Lord, and I got healed as well.”*(5) Holyfield spoke about his faith in God and his desire to box only if it was God’s will that he do so:

TBN’s Paul Crouch:

“So at this point, then, you’re not one hundred percent [100%] sure then, that you’re going to jump back in the ring. Is that where we are right now?”

Holyfield:

“Yeah, you’re right. It’s God[’s] will if I’m gonna fight. I'm not doin’ anything these days to glorify myself, but to glorify the Lord.”

On June 12, 2007, I was awakened by a “night vision” which was so disturbing that I wanted to forget about it. Yet it is a very sobering message that needs Holyfield’s attention:

In the vision Holyfield was standing alone in a pair of boxing trunks. Although he was visible, he was surrounded by darkness. The most disturbing part of the vision was the strong impression of the word “death”. The message of the vision is that Holyfield is suffering from spiritual death.

The vision led to me e-mailing Duane “Bishop” Swilley on June 25th. Here is the e-mail to Brother Swilley:

Subject: The Champion Evander

Dear Bishop Swilley,

Praise the name of the Lord. Please let me introduce myself. My name is Alan Richardson, and I am part of the FMH Children's Club school of prophets. Brother Bruce Hallman, who is the founder of our ministry, has corresponded with you once before and for your convenience I have attached that e-mail (below).

I am of course writing you about Heavyweight Boxing Champion Evander Holyfield. The Lord began giving me a prophetic message for Evander in January of 2004. In April of 2005, I gave it to Team Holyfield through their website, EvanderHolyfield.com (The weblink for that message is at the bottom of this e-mail). I believe the message can serve as encouragement for Brother Holyfield and those who have an interest in his boxing, and more importantly, his witness and ministry for the Lord.

I became a sufferer of paraplegia when I had a spinal cord injury in 1985, as the result of a motorcycle accident. But the Lord has used this handicap in my life. As the gospel writer Paul said, "When I am weak, then am I strong" (2 Cor. 12:10). I followed Evander's boxing career in the early 90's, until the Lord brought me into a saving relationship with Him in 1994. At the times I watched Evander box or speak out for the Lord on television I found him to be a great inspiration in my life, as he took on champions of the heavyweight boxing world, as David took on the giant, Goliath. And especially to hear him give offer praise and glory to the Lord for the gifts and accomplishments and ministry that he has been afforded.

But I have become increasingly concerned for Evander and his ministry in recent months. It was several days ago (June 12) that I awakened with Evander on my mind. I was disturbed by the strong impression of the word was "death", accompanied by physical (visible) darkness. This made me quite uncomfortable, and I really just wanted to ignore it. But I know that I cannot afford to ignore this. I have asked the Lord to help me take the dream of June 12 as seriously as He takes it. I began praying about writing you, and seven (7) days ago He prompted to send the message you are reading now.

To be honest, I am disturbed when I look at Team Holyfield's website or read of the plans he has in an interview, and the Lord is no longer seems to be mentioned or looked to. With Evander's bit for yet another world title, I am sure you will agree that it is vitally important that Evander do those things which the Lord directs him to do. Amen. I heard Evander commit to that very thing duing a 1996 TBN interview when he testified of the healing he received for his heart arrhythmia, saying, "I'm not going to do anything unless the Lord says [to]..."

I am looking forward to seeing Evander "FIGHT the GOOD FIGHT of faith", and start saying "THE LORD said...", once again. I will pray for Evander. Please join me in praying for him, and especially what role the Lord will have you play in encourageing and ministering to Brother Evander in the coming days. Thank you. To Jesus be the praise.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." - 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (KJV)

All for the love of Jesus,

         Alan Richardson

P.S. Evander's next bout is scheduled for June 30 in the city of El Paso, where I am now living. I discovered an invitation from Team Holyfield and the fight promoters the same day that I had the dream about Evander. I was quite amazed, and began seeking the Lord for the meaning of it all. May God's will be done.

“He that hath the bride is the bridegroom [Jesus]: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.” - John 3:29 (Holy Bible, King James Version)

“...To root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant [destroy, then reconstruct the temple of God].” - Jeremiah 1:10 (Holy Bible, King James Version)

***************************************************

The Lord has revealed through a night vision and the word “death” that Holyfield suffers from a condition called spiritual death. Spiritual death is the end result of disobedience. But the Lord is merciful, and is reaching out to Holyfield in his rebellion so that he can repent and be saved.

Bishop SwilleyCreflo Dollar         During Holyfield’s TBN interview in 1996 he made a commitment in front of the whole world to pursue boxing or anything else in life only if it was“God’s will”. So what happened??? Holyfield is suffering from spiritual death (he is lost) because he has failed to walk in obedience to God’s will for his life. But why is that. Two big reasons are Duane Swilley and Creflo Dollar. Bishop” Swilley told us that he was preaching a message in ’85 or ’86 when Holyfield was the first person to come forward and receive the Lord. Brother Swilley has also said he served as chaplain for the Atlanta Falcons where he was able to talk to Holyfield and get to know him. Creflo Dollar became Holyfield’s pastor, giving him the responsibility of instructing Holyfield in how to worship God in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Instead he preached the “Word of Flesh” error and the love of money (for more on this subject read “Dead Liver-less Frogs And The Word-Faith Movement” at www.fmh-child.org), not THE TRUTH. Brother Swilley and Brother Dollar have both failed in their callings to help Holyfield. Why, you ask. Jesus says it best: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” (John 12:43) In a word it’s called COMPROMISE! Men choose to COMPROMISE THE GOSPEL and their calling to serve God because they don’t want to preach the hard truth that will earn them disfavor with man. Compromise results always in another ugly reality of life and ministry called “error” (for more on this subject read “The Word Of Faith Error And Copeland, Meyer, Price, Crouch, And Hinn” at www.fmh-child.org). Duane Swilley and Creflo Dollar get a DISHONORABLE MENTION for their self-seeking and self-promoting ways that contribute to Holyfield’s MAKING GOD A “LIAR (see “Christians Who Make God A Liar” @ www.fmh-child.org).

Now that the problem (disobedience) has been identified we will look toward the solution. As previously stated, Holyfield gave a live television interview to Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Jan Crouch in November 1996. As Holyfield waited to be interviewed Jan read a portion of Scripture. She read Chapter 1, Verse 12 of the Gospel According To John. This happens to be a key Scripture that contains the message of truth that Holyfield need’s for his life. Thus saith the Lord!

“But as many as received him, to them he [Jesus] gave the power (Gr. exousia) to become sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” - John 1:12 (KJV)

exousia (ex-oo-see'-ah) - G1849; it is permissible, allowed. Permission, authority, right, liberty, power to do anything…As far as right, authority, capability is concerned it involves ability, power, strength… (Complete New Testament With Greek Parallel)

This verse tell us that the Lord Jesus paid the penalty for our sins on the Cross so that depraved, sinful man can become a son of God.

“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?” - John 6:66-67 (KJV)

The question “Will ye also go away?” that was posed by Jesus serves to remind us that disciples of Jesus Christ have chosen to “go away” (turn back) from Him. In this Scripture, the great majority of Jesus’ disciples turned away, leaving only the original twelve. When through presumptuous sin a child of God neglects “so great salvation” (Hebrews 2:3) as the Lamb slain for us, to him it is to “draw back” unto perdition (Hebrews 10:39).

“Obedience keeps us ‘in the light as he [Jesus] is in the light’ (1 John 1:7).” – My Utmost For His Highest, January 20, by Oswald Chambers

The following two (2) Scriptures reveal how a child of God can be made a son of God:

“My little children (Gr. teknion), of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed (Gr. morphoo) in you…” - Galatians 4:19 (KJV)

teknion (tek-nee'-on) - G5040; diminuitive of teknon (5043). A little child. Used only figuratively and always in the pl. A term of affection by a teacher to his disciples (John 13:33; Gal 4:19; 1 John 2:1, 12, 28; 3:7, 18; 4:4; 5:21). (Complete New Testament With Greek Parallel)

morphoo (mor-fo'-o) - G3445; to form fashion, originally used of artists who shape their material into an image. Used only in Galatians 4:19, where the Christian is described as a little child who needs to mature…transform. (Complete New Testament With Greek Parallel)

Morphoo indicates the growing and maturing process that a child or immature son must allow the Lord to prefect in him through seeking His will, hearing His voice, and obeying His commands (for more about being a “Word processor” for Jesus through a walk of obedience to His commands see Three Old Testament Sacrifices: Stages Of Salvation @ www.fmh-child.org).

The Lord says its time to grow up, Holyfield! The next verse sheds light on how it’s done:

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the SONS (Gr. uihos) of God.” - Romans 8:14 (KJV)

uihos (hwee-o's) - G5207; son distinguished from teknon (5043) (John 9:1; 18:20; Gal 4:30), child. In 1 John 1:3…Huios is reserved for the Son of God. Huios primarily signifies the relationship of offspring to parent and not simply the birth as indicated by teknon (5043). Used metaphorically of prominent moral characteristics...In the NT used of male offspring (Gal 4:30); legitimate offspring (Heb 12:8); descendants, irrespective of their gender (Rom 9:27), generally demonstrating behavior or character…The difference between believers as children (tekna) of God and as sons (huioi) is brought out in Romans 8:14-21. Tekna refers to those who were born of God [who have received “justification”, versus “sanctification” or “glorification”] and huioi refers to those who show maturity acting as sons. When just the basic relationship as a born-again [“justified”] child of God is referred to, it is expressed as tekna (Romans 8:16). Huios gives evidence of the dignity and one’s relationship and likewise to God’s character. (Complete New Testament With Greek Parallel)

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia gives the following explanation of “sonship”:

“Unlike Him, men's moral sonship is neither eternal nor universal. Are they therefore sons in any sense always and everywhere? All children are heirs of the kingdom of God and objects of the Father's care (Luk_18:16; Mat_18:10). But men may turn away from the Father and become unworthy to be called His sons (Luk_15:13, Luk_15:19). They may become children of the devil (1Jo_3:10; Joh_8:44), and children of wrath (Eph_2:3). Then they lose the actuality, but not the potentiality, of sonship. They have not the experience or character of sons, but they are still moral and rational beings made in the image of God, open to the appeal and influence of His love, and able to “rise and go to their Father.” They are objects of God's love (Joh_15:13; Rom_5:8) and of His gracious search and seeking (Luk_15:4; Joh_11:52). But they are actual sons only when they are led by the Spirit of God (Rom_8:14); and even so their sonship will only be consummated in the resurrection (Rom_8:23; Luk_20:36).

So what does the Bible tell us is the difference between an immature son and a mature son? The son that allows the Spirit of God to pattern his life and direct his steps is the mature son:

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health [nourishment] to thy navel, and marrow [strength] to thy bones...My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.” - Proverbs 3:5-6, 11-12 (KJV)

Concerning Holyfield and his calling in the kingdom of God a Scripture that speaks volumes is one that we have previously looked at. It speaks about Holyfield’s call to live a sanctified life unto the Lord by walking in his God-given calling of “PROPHET:

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee [Brother Holyfield], and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” - Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

Holyfield can only become a “V.S.P.” (Very Successful Person) in God’s eyes ONE way: Obey God by serving Him as a prophet to the nations!

If Holyfield wants to be the “Champ” Jesus designed him to be, he must “Keep the faith” and “…Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ…” - 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)
